Projects we funded

Barnet Council is working with local residents, communities and schools to deliver a programme of activities to celebrate BHM 2022. See below a list of the different projects that the council has funded to support activities for this year's BHM.

Community groups

We supported 12 organisations to host an event or activity through the BHM 2022 community fund:

  • Barnet Community Projects: Community celebration event which includes cooking classes for Jamaican and African dishes, display of traditional dresses, sports competitions and music.
  • Barnet TV: To create a video about past and present leaders from the black community in Barnet.
  • Colindale Communities Trust: A community event to celebrate the contribution of communities from both Africa and the Caribbean who have made Grahame Park their home over the years.
  • Unitas (Barnet Youth Zone): A special event for Unitas members and their families to celebrate Black history and culture with African drumming workshops, hair styling in African-Caribbean styles and more.
  • Bull Theatre: Providing a platform for black performers to showcase their talents through music, dance and spoken word.
  • The BYT Project: An evening community event for local families in Colindale and Burnt Oak to celebrate black history month.
  • Black Books Matter UK: Creative Storytelling Workshop and industry Q&A allows to increase young peoples' skills and aspirations.
  • Burnt Oak Seventh Day Adventist Church: A community event with an emphasis on health issues with high prevalence in the Black community such as sickle cell anaemia, diabetes, stroke and prostate cancer.
  • NW7Hub: A series of workshops for local schools on the topic: "What does black history mean to you?" which in a showcase event for the wider community .
  • Barnet Mencap: Supporting clients with learning disabilities and or autism to express their knowledge of black communities through art / craft session to paint which will be exhibited to the wider community.
  • Living Way Ministeries: Supporting a youth-led celebration event which includes performance of cultural arts & crafts, games, food music, dance and native dressing show.
