Barnet Council will be working with local residents and communities to celebrate BHM. Local communities and organisations can now apply to the council for funding to support activities for this year's BHM. In addition, the council is planning a programme of events which is being co-designed with schools, headteachers and council officers.

Get involved - apply for funding by 12 September

Community organisations can apply for £500 - £1,000 to host an event or activity to celebrate BHM 2022 in Barnet. In exceptional circumstances bids over £1,000 will be considered. The grant can support new or already planned activities that are open to all members of the local community. Examples of events and activities include talks, film showings, performances, art projects and exhibitions, food and cooking events. Joint applications are encouraged and will be considered.

Key dates and information:

  • The application period closed on Monday 12 September
  • A review panel will assess all proposals as part of our due diligence process. The four-person panel will have Black representatives from Barnet’s public, academic and community sectors. Fund Panel members have now been selected and are confirmed as:
  • Agnes Slocombe - former West Hendon Councillor and Mayor of Barnet
  • Councillor Linda Lusingu - Friern Barnet ward
  • Darwin Bernardo – Founder of Nutmeg Youth Charity
  • Dr Doirean Wilson - Diversity Lead at Middlesex University
  • There was also an opportunity for a Black member of the local community to join the panel. They must not be affiliated with any of the organisations applying for funding this year and available on 13 -14 September to review proposals. To express an interest, they were asked to email consultation@barnet.gov.uk with ‘why you would like to be involved’ in less than 300 words or their CV, by Thursday 8 September. This opportunity has now closed.
  • Successful applicants will be informed by Thursday 15 September and receive the grant by Friday 23 September.

Please read the BHM fund guidelines and then complete the application form. If you have any questions about the fund, email consultation@barnet.gov.uk.
