Our aim is to work collaboratively with local people and organisations to re-imagine and revitalise an empty space on The Concourse in Grahame Park. A key ambition of our work on the Grahame Park Concourse is to respond to what the community have already told us about:

  • creating better facilities and shops
  • more events
  • improving community safety.

We have an exciting opportunity to re-imagine the concourse for three years, before the redevelopment commences. We are prioritising a collaborative approach on 11 The Concourse.

This page is intended to give you an opportunity to stay involved and up to date with the development of 11 the Concourse, the old “community shop” as it becomes a cafe.

Latest Update (November 2024)

The Council has secured significant funding from the UK government Shared Prosperity Fund towards this key local project. We remain committed to exploring every avenue to ensure it goes ahead despite the Council’s significant budgetary pressures and our plans to close a large funding gap for essential council services. . We have also appointed an operator, and we are actively working with them to continue to move the project forward.

We are reviewing the café’s design to identify potential cost-saving measures, with the aim of opening by April 2025 (pending final financial approval).

Update (June 2024)

Over the past two months, we have been popping up to engage with people who live and work in Grahame Park to find out how you’d like the new café to look and feel.

We popped up outside No.11 the Concourse to find out what the communities preferred name for the café is. We had a shortlist of three names (a long list of your ideas for names are here):

  1. Café 180 (this name is focussing on the turnaround / positive changes happening in Grahame Park)
  2. Greet.Play.Eat (wordplay on GPE and what we hope everyone will do in the new cafe!)
  3. Concourse Café (a celebration of where the cafe will be!)

The chosen name is Concourse Café as people loved the fact that it celebrates the local area. The café designers, Fisher Cheng, used the chosen name and ideas from previous engagements with the community to come up with some ideas for the branding of the space. They came up with two designs, Bold and Bright and Fresh Greens, for the community to choose their favourite at the Clear Hold Build event on Thursday 30th May.

Fresh Greens is the winner and will be incorporated into the logo and design of the café space.

What is Clear Hold Build?

As part of A New Met for London commitment to do more to support neighbourhoods affected by crime, local policing teams are using the Clear, Hold, Build (CHB) framework to precisely target specific locations affected by gang-related and organised crime. Clear, Hold, Build is a three-phase initiative developed by the Home Office that uses a problem-solving and evidence-based approach to improve the local response in tackling serious and organised crime (SOC) threats. In Grahame Park, we are overlapping between the phases to strengthen local partnerships and community engagement and ensure a positive impact.

Clear = targeting activity and crime disruption against organised crime groups and their networks from the area, creating safer places and spaces.

Hold = keeping the area more stable to stop criminals from moving back in to fill the gaps.

Build = working with community organisations and residents to focus on the causes of crime and aim to prevent it from happening again.

The Clear, Hold, Build (CHB) event brought together a collective of partners who were able to speak to members of the community around all things Clear, Hold, Build, whilst providing them with the opportunity to hear more about the importance of reporting crime and anti-social behaviour, how this supports the initiative, and the different ways they can get involved.

Update (March 2024)

On Wednesday 28th February, the architects for the community café worked alongside the council and strategic advisors to introduce residents to options for what the new café in no.11 could look and feel like. The aim of this exercise was to share more about the proposed timeline for the work and to gather ideas for how residents and local people who work in the area would like to see the café come to life.

On the day, we popped up outside of No. 11 and welcomed people to share their ideas, including:

  • Updating on the first emerging ideas for the design of the cafe layouts
  • Hearing feedback on the design options and building an understanding of what look and feel are most supported
  • Sharing inspiring images of similar projects and hearing people’s thoughts on what could be applicable in No. 11
  • Sharing any other ideas on potential uses of the community cafe and hearing people’s feedback on these

Click on each link above to see what most inspired people. You can see more about the engagement and who got involved here.

There is still a chance to get involved and help co-design the new café. Check here for updates on future workshops.

In the meantime, we are making an open call for the most joyful and imaginative café names to represent the Grahame Park neighbourhood. We would love to hear your ideas for a name for the café via the ideas page here or you can email GrahamePark@barnet.gov.uk

The council, partners, and operator will then shortlist three names and invite the community to vote for their favourite name online or in person at one of the upcoming workshops.

Update (November 2023)

During the engagement phase, from August to October, for the Reimagine the Concourse project, we spoke to over 100 people who live, work or participate in activities in Grahame Park about their vision for the estate and what they would most like to see delivered in an empty space on the Concourse.

To find out more about the community’s vision for the Concourse, and to see the ideas that came up, visit this page. On this page, you can also find out what ideas already exist on the Concourse or near to Grahame Park, and how to access them.

Following the engagement phase, we analysed what people told us and held further discussions with residents and organisations to shortlist ideas. The idea that has been most supported, and which is most feasible in the space is a cafe space with space for creative activities, which is affordable, culturally appropriate, serves healthy food, and is open in the daytime and evening.

To read about how the recommended option was analysed, you can view the consolidated business case.
