Overview

We have been allocated funding to improve play facilities across the borough. There is a fixed amount of funding available so the council has identified play facilities which would benefit the most from refurbishment.

Princes Park has been identified as one of the play areas that would benefit from improvements, and we have assigned £185,000 to make improvements to the play facilities. This includes £20,000 from the play capital fund, £150,000 from Area Committee East and £15,000 Strategic Community Infrastructure Levy.

The proposal is to make improvements to the existing playground, create a new older play area and install

What are we seeking your views on?

We would like to know what you think about the proposed younger and teen play facilities at Princes Park. You can view the complete proposal for the playground, the younger layout and the teen layout. You can also view the younger list of equipment and the teen list of equipment.

How can you give us your views?

Please take the time to complete the online questionnaire.

We will also be running two pop-up events in Tudor Sports Ground playground, so you can view the proposals. Council staff will be on hand to discuss the plans and answer any questions you may have. The pop-up events will take place at Princes Park playground, Golders Green, NW11 on the following dates:

  • Thursday 14 July 10:30am - 13:30pm
  • Tuesday 26 July 10:30am - 13:30pm

To request a questionnaire in an alternative format, please email parks@barnet.gov.uk or telephone 020 8359 7404.

Alternatively, you can write to us at: parks@barnet.gov.uk or Greenspaces, London Borough of Barnet, 2 Bristol Avenue, Colindale, NW9 4EW.

If you wish to have your say on another playground, please return to the Parks Improvements consultation homepage.

What happens next?

We will review the feedback to see if there is any interest in changing the play facilities and we will make any amendments to the plans where possible and within the budget allocated. The improvement work to the playground is likely to take place in 2023.

The council will publish the consultation findings on this page, and we will also let you know how we are acting on the results of the consultation under ‘We asked, You said, We did'.

    We asked

We asked for your views on the proposed play facilities at Princes Park.

    You said

We received 168 responses to the online questionnaire, we received 28 direct emails and we spoke to 47 people at the two events in the park.

The key themes from the public consultation were:

    • a fair number of respondents did not want the new older children’s play area to be on the area proposed, as it is highly valued, unshaded, well used and one of the limited open spaces in the park that can be used by all
    • a few respondents said there was no need to replace the current playground
    • request for more facilities for disabled children
    • request for surfacing under the current benches and picnic tables in the fenced playground, and more benches and picnic tables
    • views on the location of the football goals were varied, with a few comments that they should not be installed
    • for the older equipment respondents liked items that could spin and where multiple children could play at one time.

    We did

Following the feedback received we have produced a revised proposal for the play facilities. We have relocated the older children’s play equipment, and we have changed all the older children’s play equipment to enable more children to be playing at the same time. We will be running a public consultation on these changes in November 2022.

We have swapped a basket swing for a mirage swing, which can be used by young children and those with additional needs. We plan to provide a special strap that can be used with the swing.

Within the revised proposal we will be surfacing under the current benches and picnic tables in the fenced playground. We do not currently have the money for more benches and picnic tables.

The revised proposal includes the provision of two football goals and the public consultation seeks further opinion on the goal posts.

We have added an additional spinner into the fenced playground and removed the spheres, which were not a popular item.
