Burnt Oak Community Fun Day – 27th October 2023, 12-6pm

As part of our long term Town Centre Public Space Improvements project, a key objective is to enhance the experience of moving through & dwelling in the town centre. This includes promoting active travel including cycling and the pedestrian experience. Barnet Council in partnership with Erect Architecture piloted a temporary road closure on Barnfield Road between Watling Avenue and Silkstream Road to explore how we can creatively use the street if we removed vehicles for one day. This also coincided with World Car Free Day.

The objective of the event is to test the principles of using existing highway and pavement space for other uses to improve the public space such as introducing greenery, seating and active travel. This is intended to increase visitors to the high street and footfall to local businesses as a destination to enjoy and spend time whilst involving our active community along the way.

The ’Burnt Oak Community Fun Day’ involved free activities targeted towards children and young people due to proximity of Barnfield Primary School and Silkstream Children’s centre and our regeneration project’s co-design approach to young people’s participation. The day involved a market zone with various craft workshops, Dr Bike, entertainment/music, a free plant raffle from our local florist Aspens, and a play street with street furniture by McCloy + Muchemwa repurposed from the London Festival of Architecture and the ‘Big Draw’ chalk workshop.

We commissioned Barnet TV to produce video interviews during the day… Watch this Space!

The event was positively received by Barnfield Road residents, local businesses, local children and parents enjoying the temporarily pedestrianised space and community partners who were able to network and promote their services.
