Participation activities should be considered early, and throughout the work you are doing. It’s often helpful to think of your planning in a spiral shape – you will constantly be building on the previous round of activities. You can use these stages to plan out the concrete steps that you need to think about.
Analyse | Plan | Participation activity | Act and Report | Reflect | Repeat |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Identify communities who are affected by your work Outline priorities and parameters for the current round of activity Consider which participation type is appropriate Seek feedback | Target who you want involved and how to engage them Plan realistically for what, when, where and how activities will take place Coordinate with colleagues and partners Build in flexibility Seek feedback | Engage participants on terms that work for them Undertake activity Adjust as necessary Seek feedback | Report back what you have done, why and what next Incorporate outcomes of participation into work | Listen in participants' reflections Learn from activity's successes and failures | Build learning into your next cycle of participation activities |
