Overview

The London Borough of Barnet is privileged to have many buildings of local architectural or Historic interest. These buildings add to the character of the borough and are formally identified by being included on what is known as our Local List.

You may remember that we recently consulted on a new selection criteria for the Local List. This was part of a comprehensive review of the Council’s Local List of assets of local architectural or historic merit. You can find more information on this particular consultation and how we have acted on what you told us here

You can find more information on this particular consultation and how we have acted on what you told us here . We are now consulting with local residents, national and local heritage organisations, amenity groups and interested individuals to identify assets of Architectural or Historic Interest.

The Local List is an opportunity for the community and the local authority to jointly identify heritage assets that are valued as distinctive elements of the local historic environment.

The Local List has not been reviewed since its creation in 1986, but recently the council adopted new selection criteria in line with ‘Historic England Advice Note 7’ on Local Heritage Listing, which was issued last year, List as part of a wider community project.

This is a good practice guide for local listings, and sets out what to consider when developing a local heritage list. The guide is organised under the general headings of Historic Interest and Architectural Interests.

We are now seeking new nominations for addition to the list, which should comply with the newly adopted selection criteria.

Why we are consulting

We welcome your nominations for new assets to be included on the borough’s Local List.

We want to give residents, businesses and other key stakeholders the opportunity to nominate buildings, structures or monuments that they feel are of local heritage significance and which make a positive contribution to the local built environment. This ensures that they are given due consideration whenever planning proposals for change are put forward.

Also the National Planning Policy Framework states that local planning authorities should: “Have up to date evidence about the historic environment in their area and use it to assess the significance of heritage assets and the contribution they make to their environment.” This review of the Local List will also help ensure the list is up to date.

How to nominate

To nominate a building or structure you feel is suitable for inclusion on the Local List please email: hannah.barter@uvns.org

Or write to:

Urban Vision Enterprise CIC

Foxlowe Arts Centre (1st Floor)

Stockwell Street

Leek

Staffordshire

ST13 6AD

Any nominations should include the full postal address (including postcode) and an up-to-date photograph. Any additional information about the building or structure, which would explain why you feel it meets the criteria for inclusion on the list, should also be included. If possible, a map showing where the building or structure is located would also be useful.
