Climate change affects every one of the 400,000 residents living here in Barnet.

Even though Barnet is one of the greenest boroughs in London with more than 2000 acres of green land, annually we are producing 1.76 million tonnes of carbon emissions. That is the equivalent of filling the rugby pitch at StoneX Stadium around 15,000 times - which would take about 79 million trees to absorb! (Barnet is home to 50,000 trees, on record).

Around 240,000 children in London suffer with asthma - about one-third of these cases are linked to air pollution, and around half of London’s air pollution is caused by road transport.

In May 2022, Barnet declared a Climate and Biodiversity Emergency because we recognise that urgent action is needed.

Find out how we're working together with residents, businesses and community groups to become a net zero council by 2030 and borough by 2042:

Working together to become one of the most sustainable boroughs in London

It is our promise that we will work faster and harder than ever before to make Barnet one of the most sustainable boroughs in London.

We are launching a Citizens Assembly, to work with Barnet residents to create ideas and make recommendations towards becoming a more sustainable, for future generations to come. In parallel to the Citizens’ Assembly, the council will also be launching a Young People’s Assembly; aiming to recruit 20 young people aged between 11-17 years old from across the borough. The recommendations from the assemblies will be presented in summer 2023. Read more here.

We can all do our bit to look after the planet, and with your help, Barnet will become a net zero carbon borough by 2042.
