This consultation has now closed.

However, we do have a current consultation concerning the draft Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Strategy. Please click here to access.

There is also a consultation on the draft Housing Strategy. Please click here to access.

Overview

Barnet Council is drafting a new Homelessness Strategy to address how the borough will tackle and prevent homelessness in the future. The proposed themes of the strategy are:

1. Preventing homelessness in Barnet
2. Securing sufficient accommodation for homeless households and for those at risk of homelessness
3. Having sufficient support in place for homeless households and for those at risk of homelessness
4. Supporting rough sleepers to address their housing and other needs.

We would like to hear the views of members of the public, our residents, customers, partners and stakeholders, about the proposed themes, to help us to develop the strategy further. Your feedback will inform the development of the draft Homelessness Strategy which will be reviewed at the Housing Committee in October 2018. Subject to approval, we will then carry out a further consultation on the draft strategy.

How to give your views

Please take the time to complete our online questionnaire. It will take around 15 minutes to complete and all responses will be anonymous.

For further information, or if you would like to be part of a partnership forum working with the council to prevent and resolve homelessness in Barnet, please email Faisal.Butt@Barnet.gov.uk.

The survey received 102 responses, 29% from residents and 33% from organisations providing services to homeless clients. Generally, respondents agreed that the main reasons for homelessness in the borough were due to the loss of rented accommodation and family breakdown. In terms of the most effective support, 36% agreed that early support was right while 24% said it was help with finding alternative accommodation. The majority of the respondents also supported more collaborative working between agencies to establish clearer referral routes, as well as procuring more affordable housing. 73% of respondents thought support for rough sleepers should be improved, including outreach work alongside provision of more hostel and supported accommodation to help address housing and other needs.

    We did

These views were reflected upon in the drafting of the homelessness and rough sleeping strategy. Collaborative working with agencies, procuring more affordable housing and helping rough sleepers address their housing and other needs are all priorities in the strategy. Additionally, the causes of homelessness and rough sleeping identified by respondents fed into the drafting of these priorities. The full draft strategy can be viewed here.
