Overview

Barnet Council is committed to improving its residents’ lives and making its high streets great places to live, work, learn, shop, relax, invest, socialise and visit for all.

Golders Green, classified as a ‘Main Town Centre’, is prioritised in Barnet’s Entrepreneurial Strategy in terms of having the potential to accommodate growth and investment in the town centre.

As part of this prioritisation, in July 2017 we appointed Fluid Design (an urban design, architecture and participation specialist) to develop a Town Centre Strategy for Golders Green. The purpose of the strategy is to provide a practical handbook for the council, community and our partners to develop a strategic and comprehensive plan to guide improvements for Golders Green Town Centre.

In developing the strategy Fluid Design, to date, has undertaken a range of consultation and engagement activities with the local community. These events have been used to better understand the area and collate the opinions, thoughts and ideas of the community and other key stakeholders, to help inform and shape the vision and the strategy proposed to date.

To build on the previous engagement, we now wish to give the local community an opportunity to review the final draft of the strategy and identify their priorities from the list of ‘proposed improvements’ identified for each character area within the town centre. Your feedback will be collated to produce a ‘Community Project Priorities List’ that will be integrated into the Final Golders Green Town Centre Strategy document.

This consultation generated a lot of response with 54 people completing feedback forms, that demonstrated clear support, with over 70% of survey respondents agreeing with the overall vision. This level of support was maintained over the three ‘character areas’ identified, with only the Golders Green Hub area around the station falling below this, at 60% (but with 20% stating they were neutral regarding this area). This general level of support was also reflected in the face-to-face conversations with over 250 community members.

The final strategy document has been revised in response to public consultation and the Final version of the strategy was taken to Housing and Growth Committee in January 2020 for adoption.
