Overview

We are looking to introduce a number of new road safety measures that will reduce the speed of vehicles and also aim to address concerns raised by residents in Friern Barnet Lane and the surrounding area.

We have carried out a feasibility study for this area (including collisions, speed, traffic, origin-destination and pedestrian surveys, site investigations, review of junction layouts). Based on the results of the study, proposals were presented and discussed with ward councillors, and it was agreed to proceed with the proposals that involve the least disturbance for residents.

What we are proposing

We are proposing to introduce the following key traffic safety improvement proposals:

  1. Upgrading existing pedestrian crossings along Friern Barnet Lane, between the junctions with St James Avenue and Friern Barnet Road. This includes introducing tactile paving.
  2. Introducing a new uncontrolled crossing with a central refuge island on Friern Barnet Lane, junction with Manor Drive, making it a safer crossing place for pedestrians.
  3. Upgrading the existing zebra crossing outside the entrance to Friary Park to a zebra crossing on top of a raised table to improve safety for pedestrians at a vital point on the road.
  4. Redesigning the junction of Friern Barnet Lane with Goldsmith Road, altering the existing layout and creating a better crossing for pedestrians and the Goldsmith Quietway cycleway.
  5. Introducing a 20mph speed limit over the area that covers the following roads: Bellevue Road, Carlton Road, Hartland Road, Holly Park Road, Kennard Road, McDonald Road, Parkhurst Road, Ramsden Road, Stanford Road.
  6. Incorporating ‘Double Yellow Lines’ around junctions with the above-mentioned surrounding roads to improve visibility for pedestrians and motorists.
  7. Repositioning a number of resident parking bays on Friern Barnet Lane and surrounding roads to improve road layout and minimise the risk of accidents.
