Overview
In Barnet, like many other local authorities, we have a system of parking bays and parking permits that prioritises parking for local residents, businesses and their visitors and customers. These systems are called Controlled Parking Zones (CPZ).
Daws Lane, Hammers Lane and the “Poets Corner” CPZ parking reviews
An informal consultation was conducted by the council in December 2019 and January 2020 with residents and businesses of Daws Lane, Hammers Lane and the ‘Poets Corner’ roads in the area to find out whether they would like their road to be part of a CPZ.
This was done following a petition received from the residents of Daws Lane raising concerns regarding the high level of parking on their road by non-residents, making it difficult for residents to find available kerbside space, and requesting for their section of road to become a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ).
Another consultation was undertaken simultaneously by the Parks team, proposing to introduce parking restrictions and charges in the car parks to effectively manage the local car parks situated in Daws Lane NW7 and Wise Lane NW7 at Mill Hill Park.
In August 2021, the restrictions and charges were implemented in Daws Lane Car Park and Wise Lane car park which now apply between 8am and 6.30pm, Mondays to Saturdays.
What are we proposing going forward
We are now carrying out an informal parking consultation with those residents and businesses of Daws Lane, Hammers Lane, and the “Poets Corner” roads in the area previously consulted to find out if there are currently any parking issues and whether they would like their road to be part of a CPZ.
This informal consultation is intended to give the council a clearer understanding of the parking issues in your road, particularly following the introduction of charging in the nearby Daws Lane and Wise Lane car park. This helps to determine whether any changes may need to be made to increase parking opportunities for residents and businesses, improve accessibility and to enhance road safety. Any changes could also help to promote use of sustainable travel modes by reducing the need to use a car when making journeys such as to the shops, school or to work.
The introduction of parking controls and/or charging, such as in the nearby car parks, often results in displacement, where drivers park their vehicles in the neighbouring streets with no parking controls. We therefore consult a wider area other than that currently known to be experiencing parking difficulties.
The views received from the community will help us decide on whether or not we will progress a scheme that would prioritise parking for the residents and local businesses in the area.

What happens after the consultation closes?
All the responses will be analysed, and the outcome will help us determine what action needs to be taken to address areas of concern. We will publish the results of the consultation, our decision and how we are acting on the results of the consultation on this web page in March 2024.
