We are consulting on a new revised plan to deliver improved outcomes for children and young people in Barnet. The draft plan outlines our ambition for the next four years on how we will help young people to excel and enjoy living in the borough.

The plan has been developed in collaboration and engagement with children, young people and their parents and carers, as well as those that support them. Our aim is for Barnet to be the best place in London to raise a child and for all children to thrive and achieve their potential – socially, emotionally, and academically.

What we are proposing

We remain committed to our vision of a family-friendly borough, where children and young people’s rights are respected: a place where the voices, needs, priorities and rights of children, and those who care for them, are considered and taken seriously as an integral part of public policy, programmes, and decision-making. It is important that all children, including the most vulnerable, have access to a good education, and are able to lead safe, happy and healthy lives. We have chosen to adopt four key drivers that underpin delivery of the plan based on feedback.

  • Great partnerships: Participation and co-production
  • Inclusion
  • Great outcomes: Tackling the gap and fighting inequality
  • Children and young people having fun.

Our ambition includes a wide scope of activity to deliver the outcomes identified. We intend to work together from now until the next plan by organising ourselves around four key themes stemming from our conversations with children, young people and parent carers as well as our own data and research. These are:

  • Family and Belonging – supporting all our children, including those in care and care experienced young people, to live their lives successfully, to develop a sense of identity, improve wellbeing and to have fun and play
  • Safe and Secure - ensuring that the most vulnerable are protected, safe and supported to make the best choices and to build trusted relationships
  • Health and Wellbeing - supporting our children and young people to adopt healthy lifestyles to prevent avoidable illness and improve their social, physical and mental wellbeing, including through integrated health and social care
  • Education and Skills – supporting children and young people to reach their educational and academic potential, by closing attainment gaps and reducing exclusion.

    We asked

We asked for your views on our Children and Young People’s Plan that sets out our ambitions and priorities for children and young people in Barnet. It identifies what all partners will do to deliver this and how we will gauge our success.

    You said

We received 31 responses to the online questionnaire. The majority of those responding to the questionnaire agree with all the themes the council is proposing to focus on for the next five years. Over three-quarters of those responding to the questionnaire agreed with all the objectives identified in the Children and Young People’s Plan.

    We did

We have published the Children and Young People’s Plan and in response to the consultation feedback, an action plan has been developed and structured against key priorities. The monitoring of this Plan will be by the Children and Young People’s Partnership Board. Regular reports on progress will be presented to the Board for scrutiny. The Partnership, which includes young people representatives, will ensure that agreed priorities against objectives are reflected in partnership work to make certain the impact of the Plan is felt by children, young people and their families.
