Overview

In Barnet, like many other local authorities, we have a system of parking bays and parking permits that prioritises parking for local residents, businesses and their visitors and customers. These systems are called Controlled Parking Zones.


What we are proposing

We have received concerns from the residents of Blundell Road and the surrounding streets regarding high levels of non-resident parking. This has been attributed to parking displacement from the neighbouring roads with existing parking controls. It could also be due to being close to the underground railway stations, businesses, and other local amenities. There are new concerns that

What we are proposing

We have received concerns from the residents of Blundell Road and the surrounding streets regarding high levels of non-resident parking. This has been attributed to parking displacement from the neighbouring roads with existing parking controls. It could also be due to being close to the underground railway stations, businesses, and other local amenities. There are new concerns that the parking could worsen with the introduction of Burnt Oak North (BON) Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) which is due to become operational from 22 May 2023. It has therefore become necessary to review the existing parking situation.

This informal consultation is intended to give the council a clearer understanding of the parking issues in Blundell Road and the surrounding streets. We have also engaged an external agency to carry out parking stress surveys on the roads in the area, to determine whether any changes may be needed to increase parking opportunities for residents and businesses, improve accessibility and to enhance road safety. The changes could also help to promote use of sustainable travel modes by reducing the need to use a car when making journeys such as to the shops, school or to work.

The introduction of parking controls often results in displacement, where drivers park their vehicles in the neighbouring streets with no parking controls. We therefore consult with a wider area other than that currently known to be experiencing parking difficulties.

    We asked for your views on the implementation of parking controls, including the introduction of a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) in Blundell Road and neighbouring streets HA8, to address local parking concerns and demand.

    You said

    We received 99 responses from approximately 900 properties, which equates to an overall response rate of 11%.

    87% of the respondents told us that they or their family or visitors always or often experience parking problems near their property during morning, afternoon, and evening on weekdays. They stated that parking problems are mainly caused by commuter parking, multiple car households, or trade vans/trucks.

    Overall, 68% of the respondents indicated they are specifically in favour of a Controlled Parking Zone being implemented with 64% preferring an all-day hours of operation.

    The response for the days of operation was about equally divided with 32% preferring Monday to Friday while 33% preferred 7 days a week.

    We did

    Following the informal consultation feedback, we are developing proposals that would help to improve parking situation in Blundell Road and the surrounding area. The proposals will be discussed and agreed with your Ward Members and subject to funding availability, will be progressed to statutory consultation and implementation.
