Background

Our Corporate Plan 2023- 2026 sets out a new vision for Barnet - one that puts Caring for People, our Places and the Planet at the heart of everything we do. Barnet is a great place to live and work, and our plan has big ambitions to make it even better.

As part of our plan we are committed to enhancing our green spaces and parks. Our Parks and Open Spaces Strategy, which is currently going through Cabinet, cites the West Hendon Playing Fields as a sports hub investment site.

West Hendon Playing Fields is a vital part of Barnet's community, but it currently faces certain challenges that affect the way it is used. These challenges include tired built infrastructure and facilities that need improvement, limited access from adjacent communities, and an identity with potential to be reinforced as a space that serves its community.

We have earmarked the site as a strategic location for a wide-ranging package of improvements, to transform the playing fields to an exemplary destination park for people and wildlife an we want to work with the local community to help us develop the improvement.

To help us develop our vision for the park and support the improvements of West Hendon Playing Fields, we have commissioned a team of specialist consultants, including Arup, Haley Sharpe Design, Tate + Co and Sensory Trust.

You can find more information about the project and our partners by visiting our dedicated engagement website.

In November 2023, we held our first round of engagement. In response to this, we will be publishing some FAQs on this page and on the WHPF dedicated engagement website in May 2024.

We'll be sharing the outcomes from the first round of engagement, along with how they've influenced the WHPF design proposal, before launching the second round of engagement in Summer 2024. Stay tuned for our findings report in the Barnet First newsletter and magazine, as well as on our dedicated engagement website.
