Spring may be on the way, but it’s still a little chilly out there. And with energy costs rising, maybe we can help – if you need somewhere to stay warm without paying the higher prices, check out some of Barnet’s warm spaces.
There are lots available throughout the borough, and many also give you a place to try out new activities and make new friends. And if you need further support when it comes to rising prices, check out our cost of living support page.
Speaking from Colindale Communities Trust (CCT) in Grahame Park, Cllr Conway, Chair of the Community Leadership and Libraries Committee, said: “It’s a real pleasure to be here today. This is one of 28 warm spaces across the borough, which includes the libraries.
“It’s lovely here because this is a really well-established community space. People are used to coming in here for a range of activities – counselling, cooking, walks, all sorts of things. Plus, they can sign-post to help and advice.
“There are amazing spaces like this across the borough who are doing so much to support local residents. I’d really like to thank everyone that’s involved for all their support.”
Bina Omare, Chief Executive of the CCT, said: “We’re based in the Old Library. We also manage the community centre in Grahame Park.
“What we do is provide a warm space, and what that means is anyone who needs some warmth – or just a chat or a cup of tea – can walk in. What we also do is provide a host of activities that are free for the local community.
“The idea is: if people come in, simply just because they feel isolated, we will talk to them, we’ll make them feel comfortable. We’ll help them into lovely programmes to help them make new friends and carry on life here with us.
“What we also do is we have our one-stop-shop, so if anyone needs any support in terms of housing benefits, debt advice, come into us. If we can’t help you, we’ll make sure the right people within Barnet can help you.”
Maureen, who lives in the Grahame Park Estate, said of the CCT: “It’s a very friendly, welcoming place to come. People are very helpful with quite a lot of issues that you have.
“Today I came in and I discovered there was this art course starting and I love painting. I find it very relaxing. I thought it would be good to sign up for that, which I probably wouldn’t have found out about if I hadn’t come in here.
“And I can come in and bring in my laptop and do some work here. And they even give me a cup of ginger tea, so they do an absolutely superb job. They’re really helping the community.”
