Overview

In Barnet, like many other local authorities, we have a system of parking bays and parking permits that prioritises parking for local residents, businesses and their visitors and customers. These systems are called Controlled Parking Zones.


What we are proposing

Underhill and the surrounding area is undergoing a huge expansion of new housing developments and amenities like schools, businesses, and other community facilities. This development has and will continue to increase the levels of car use impacting the parking situation on the local streets. It has therefore become necessary to review the existing parking situation.

Overview

In Barnet, like many other local authorities, we have a system of parking bays and parking permits that prioritises parking for local residents, businesses and their visitors and customers. These systems are called Controlled Parking Zones.


What we are proposing

Underhill and the surrounding area is undergoing a huge expansion of new housing developments and amenities like schools, businesses, and other community facilities. This development has and will continue to increase the levels of car use impacting the parking situation on the local streets. It has therefore become necessary to review the existing parking situation.

This informal consultation is intended to give the council a clearer understanding of the parking issues in these roads. We have also engaged an external agency to carry out parking stress surveys on the roads in the area. These will help to determine whether any changes are required to increase parking opportunities for residents and businesses, improve accessibility and to enhance road safety. The changes could also help to promote use of sustainable travel modes by reducing the need to use a car when making journeys such as to the shops, school or to work.

The introduction of parking controls often results in displacement, where drivers park their vehicles in the neighbouring streets with no parking controls. We therefore consult with a wider area other than that currently known to be experiencing parking difficulties.

We have written to all the properties in the consultation area inviting them to take part in the consultation. We want to hear your views regarding the parking and traffic situation on your road.

In particular we want to hear from residents, tenants, landlords, managing or letting agents, organisations, businesses and all other interested parties.

What happens after the consultation closes?

The council will use the consultation findings to inform our final decision. We will publish the results of the consultation, our decision and how we are acting on the results of the consultation on this web page in June 2023.

    We asked

    We asked for your views on the implementation of parking controls, including the introduction of a Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) Underhill, in order to address local parking concerns and demand.

    You said

    We received 291 responses from approximately 1700 properties that were consulted, which represents an overall response rate of 17%.

    46% (135 respondents) of the respondents told us they, their family or visitors always, often, or sometimes experience parking problems near their property. They stated that parking problems are mainly caused by multiple car households, commuter parking, or trade vans/trucks.

    Of those properties consulted, 15% objected to the introduction of a Controlled Parking Zone.

    25% respondents said they would like traffic issues to be investigated further to improve road safety at the road junctions and improve traffic flow along Mays Lane, Underhill, and Fairfield Way.

    There were also concerns raised regarding parking issues associated with school traffic.

    We did

    Based on the feedback received we are developing proposals to improve parking, traffic flow, and road safety in the area. The consultation feedback and any measures proposed will be discussed and agreed with your Ward Members, and subject to funding availability will be progressed to statutory consultation and implementation.
