We are inviting the community to have their say on the development of the Creative Placemaking Strategy for North Finchley Town Centre.

Creative Placemaking capitalises on a community’s unique assets, inspiration and potential with the intention of creating public spaces, places, events and activities that promote people’s health, happiness and wellbeing.

We wish to involve the local community in developing the Creative Placemaking Strategy for North Finchley Town Centre which will aim to celebrate North Finchley’s cultural diversity, build local pride, and encourage more people to visit the town centre.

Background

In line with Barnet’s Growth Strategy 2030, Barnet Council is fully committed to supporting North Finchley Town Centre to flourish as a place for all to live, work, study and play.

Since 2017, we have worked with a number of key partners, residents, community organisations, and local businesses in North Finchley to look at how we can best support the town centre to thrive.

As a result, in February 2018, we published the North Finchley Town Centre Supplementary Planning Document (SPD), a planning framework which identifies place-specific opportunities for regeneration as well as local treasures that need to be supported and celebrated.

To support the regeneration opportunities within the town centre, we have appointed Dallas–Pierce–Quintero to work with the local community to set out a vision for North Finchley Town Centre that has culture and creativity playing as a vital role in its future and develop a Creative Placemaking Strategy. This includes developing a Cultural Action Plan, a Wayfinding Action Plan and a Graphic Identity for the town centre.

This work aims to celebrate local heritage, nurture the local context, ensure cultural activation and inspire site-specific responses to future interventions. When complete, it will encompass North Finchley’s diverse cultural landscape and outline a range of actionable projects to be delivered.

Since the project launched in February 2022, we have already undertaken a range of public engagement activities, workshops and conversations with members of the local community to inform and develop the different components of the work. Through a combination of on-street pop-up engagement, online surveys and co-design workshops around 200 responses and contributions were received. To find out more, please read our Community Engagement Report.

Your views are important to us

It is essential that this work is informed by local people who live, shop, work or run businesses within North Finchley. We encourage anyone with an interest in the town centre to give their feedback, in particular we want to hear from community and cultural organisations, local residents, businesses and all other interested parties.

We wish to give you all an opportunity to review the draft Cultural Action Plan and draft Wayfinding Action Plan. We welcome you all to provide comments, ideas to further develop the projects and even volunteer to champion a project and/or be part of the cultural steering group. Your feedback will be considered and where relevant integrated into the final action plans to help the Council prioritise and plan a way forward to realise these.

How to have your say:

Dallas–Pierce–Quintero, who we have appointed to work with the local community to help develop this work, have set up a participation website for the North Finchley Town Centre – http://www.northfinchleytowncentre.co.uk/action-plan-consultation. We will also be hosting pop-ups on the high street to get people’s thoughts and feedback and promote the online consultation of the Action Plans. These will be held on:

  • Friday 23 September 12.30pm – 3pm, outside Starbucks
  • Sunday 2 October 1.30pm – 4pm, outside Sainsbury’s
