About Fiona:

My name is Fiona. I have lived in Barnet for more than 30 years and I love our parks and green spaces. I also like gardening in unused spots like verges and tree pits because we need to use all our available space for plants and flowers to increase biodiversity and clean the air.

So, my plan is GRUBS - Green Roofs Upon Bus Shelters.

What is GRUBS?

Transforming bus shelters with green roofs to enhance urban biodiversity and improve air quality. The roofs are lightweight, easy to install and to maintain.

If we put green roofs on Barnet’s bus shelters, we would add the equivalent of more than a football pitch of green space, cleaning the air at the edge of busy roads where thousands of bus passengers wait every day. They would also increase wellbeing for bus passengers and may provide inspiration for them to be involved in gardening and the environment.

The Dutch city of Utrecht has more than 300 green bus shelters and many cities around the UK boast Bee Bus Stops but in London there is just one – in Baker Street. Biodiversity is essential for healthy eco systems and to slow climate change and green roofs also help safeguard against flooding as they absorb rainwater.

Benefits to Barnet

The introduction of GRUBS would help steer Barnet towards the target of Net Zero and lead the way for the rest of London to follow. Today bus shelters, tomorrow there could be green roofs on tube stations, post boxes and public buildings.
