Overview

To address the increasing number of accidents along Mays Lane and the surrounding area, we are looking to introduce a number of new road safety measures that will reduce the speed of vehicles and also aim to address concerns raised by residents on the current width restriction.

What we are proposing

We are proposing to introduce new measures along Chesterfield Road, Mays Lane, Nupton Drive, Quinta Drive, Vale Drive and Whitings Road. The proposals aim to increase safety for pedestrians and road users.

The proposals incorporate the following measures:

  1. Introduction of double yellow lines (no waiting at any time)

  1. Introduction of double yellow lines (no waiting at any time) on localised sections of the roads and at junctions adjoining the main roads. This aims to reduce parking obstruction, reduce the displacement of parking from other CPZ area and improve visibility especially for pedestrians and school children.
  2. Extension of the current 20mph zone to include Whitings Road, Chesterfield Road, Nupton Drive and sections of Mays Lane aiming to reduce speeding.
  3. Proposed zebra crossing on Whitings Road: formal crossing point to increase safety of pedestrians, in particular school children, wishing to cross the road.
  4. Proposed uncontrolled crossing points at side roads: this proposal includes dropped kerbs and tactile paving at a number of locations in the area to improve safety for pedestrians in particular disabled users.
  5. Proposed no-entry from Quinta Drive on to Whitings Road “except for buses and cycles” to reduce the number of vehicles entering Whitings Road through this junction and to reduce conflict points between vehicles and pedestrians.
  6. Introduction of a roundabout at Whitings Road/Chesterfield Road junction: this aims to improve traffic management, reduce conflicts between vehicles and to slow speeds and reduce road accidents.
  7. Proposed no-entry into Connaught Road from Mays Lane: to improve the safety at this junction and to reduce conflicts between vehicles and between vehicles and pedestrians.
  8. Proposed zebra crossing on Mays Lane near the junction of Connaught Road: a controlled crossing point to improve safety for pedestrians.
  9. Introduction of pedestrian crossing points at side roads: this proposal will include dropped kerbs and tactile paving to provide improve safety for pedestrians in particular disabled users.
  10. Proposed removal of the existing width restriction at Manor Road junction: this aims to improve the traffic flow and remove queueing at this point.
  11. Proposed one-way onto the slip road opposite Manor Road: this aims to improve safety, reduce conflict points as currently the slip road is often used as a shortcut to avoid the width restriction.
  12. Proposed no-entry from Mays Lane onto Vale Drive (Vale Drive to be converted to one-way from Elton Avenue to Mays Lane): to reduce the numbers of vehicles entering this road and promote walking to/from school.
  13. Convert Vale Drive into one-way
  14. Proposed zebra crossing on a raised area on Mays Lane by Vale Drive: this is to provide a safer crossing point for pedestrians.
  15. Introduction of speed cushions and raised speed tables on Mays Lane, Nupton Drive, Quinta Drive, and Whitings Road: this proposal aims to reduce vehicle speeds.
  16. Widening of Chesterfield Road and Stanhope Road junction: this is to improve the transport service timings and the safety of the users by reducing the opportunity of the vehicles overtaking the bus.
  17. Proposed no right turn from Elton Avenue onto Mays Lane: to reduce conflict in a critical area and improve the safety at the junction.

We have provided more information on the proposals in the below drawings:
