Overview

Barnet Council and its key partners across health and social care, are committed to develop and improve support services for carers across the borough and would like to make sure that the voice of carers and young carers are heard at every phase in this process.

We received 270 responses to the online survey for carers strategy. A further 30 carers and young carers were engaged via remote, and in-person focus groups, led by Barnet Carers Centre.

Feedback from this robust co-production and engagement activity has informed the development of our new Carers Strategy.

This strategy will help the council to carry out its duties to support carers in their caring role. By working closely across the Council and with the wider community and carers of all ages, we aim to achieve the priorities and outcomes outlined within this strategy.

What are we seeking your views on

Our draft Carers Strategy 2023 – 2028 includes priorities and outcomes, that have been developed with the direct involvement of over 300 Barnet Carers through the co-production and engagement work led by our commissioned provider, Barnet Carers Centre, and in partnership with colleagues across the Council, Health, and the voluntary sector.

The strategy sets out important context around carers and young carers support services in Barnet and lays the foundation for critical next steps. Based on the feedback collected, we have outlined key outcomes in the strategy that will inform our action plan to implement the strategy.

We would like to hear your thoughts and comments on this new Carers Strategy, but in particular, we are seeking your views on the over-arching priorities to guide our action planning, which are as follows:

  1. Proactive identification of carers and young carers.
  2. Individualised support so that carers and young carers can get the support they need and are entitled to.
  3. Involving carers to shape future services and support offer.
  4. Raising the profile of carers and young carers.

We welcome views from all our residents who identify as carers and young carers, and any carers who care for Barnet residents. We also welcome feedback from local organisations and community groups.

What happens after the consultation engagement closes?

The next step will be to take on board your feedback, and then translate this strategy into action so that it makes a real and lasting difference to the health and wellbeing of carers of all ages.

A Carers and Young Carers Strategy Implementation board will be developed to have oversight of strategy implementation including the action plan. Actions to deliver the strategy will be informed by feedback and recommendations from carers.

    We asked

We asked for your views on the draft Carers and Young Carers Strategy, in particular views on the strategy priorities to inform the strategy action plan.

    You said

We received 12 written responses to the strategy consultation.

In addition, 10 young carers joined a focus group to discuss strategy outcomes and develop strategy actions specific to young carers.

Feedback from adult carers highlighted the importance of involving multi-agency partners in the identification and support of carers; the need for a clear offer for carers, and clarification on support available across different types of carers.

Feedback from young carers included a range of positive ideas about early identification, support with mental health and wellbeing, and to promote a positive and supportive school experience.

Feedback from Parent carers included requests for increased access to metal health support for parent carers and their children, more information advice and guidance for physical disabilities, clearer signposting to services available to them and an integrated approach from all Council services and the NHS to ensure smoother transitions when accessing services.

    We did

Feedback from this consultation informed the final version of the new Carers Strategy 2023-2028 and has been used to shape the draft strategy actions.

The final Carers and Young Carers Strategy 2023-2028 was approved at the Adults and Safeguarding Committee and the Childrens, Education and Safeguarding Committee in April 2023.

The strategy will be published this summer.

The next step is to translate the strategy themes into an action plan so that it makes a real and lasting difference to the health and wellbeing of carers of all ages.

A Carers and Young Carers Strategy Partnership Board will be established with carer input from September 2023. This board will have oversight of strategy implementation including the action plan.
