We want to co-produce an exciting, ambitious, and fun Culture Strategy that celebrates Barnet's creativity, heritage, and community. The Culture Strategy will lay out a set of collective priorities and objectives for arts and culture across the borough, and contribute towards our ambitions of becoming a 'borough of fun'.

Progress in recent months

In recent months, our primary focus has been on understanding the key priorities that the community feels are necessary to be included in the Culture Strategy. To achieve this, we have undertaken the following actions:

1- Facilitated workshops with our external steering group

2- Promoted an online survey and held several workshops

3- Conducted research to gain insights into the current cultural landscape with the borough.

Our consultation and engagement programme, which will inform the Culture Strategy and our London Borough of Culture Bid, has concluded. We extend our gratitude to everyone who participated and contributed to shaping the future of culture in Barnet.

What are our next steps ?

We are currently analysing the findings of our consultation and engagement programme. Once we have established the key priorities that have emerged from it, we will start writing the strategy.

    We asked

We asked you to apply to be part of the Culture Strategy Steering Group. This group will oversee the development of the Culture Strategy to ensure it sets out a programme for cultural development that reflects the needs of our borough and that the whole community can feel ownership of.

We asked you to answer some questions that focused on:

    • why you thought you were suitable to be on the steering group
    • your knowledge and experience
    • your connection to Barnet and how engaged you are with our local communities.

    You said

We received a high volume of responses, with 55 individuals applying. The standard of these applications was extremely high and provided us with a broad spectrum of knowledge and expertise.

    We did

We put in place fair and transparent methods to select members of the steering group. This assessment of applications was conducted by two individuals who work for the council and an independent non-council representative. 16 individuals were selected to be a member of the Culture Strategy Steering Group.
