Crowdfunding comes to Barnet

What is crowdfunding?

Crowdfunding allows anyone – whether you’re an individual, a small business, or a community group – to propose an idea to be funded by members of the public. If enough people pledge just a small amount, an idea can quickly become reality.

Barnet Council is working with partners Capita, Regional Enterprise (Re) and Spacehive – the world’s first crowdfunding website dedicated to civic projects – to create Barnet Together. This new initiative gives community organisations and individuals the opportunity to pitch an idea that benefits the local area and attract financial backing from the public and the council.

Through crowdfunding with Barnet Together, we’ll be offering pledges of up to £5,000 to support the creativity of Barnet residents who want to do something positive for their communities and help make their local areas even better places to live, work and visit.

From community gardens and street murals to festivals and sports facilities, crowdfunding allows people to pitch ideas for projects that will improve Barnet's high streets, residential neighbourhoods, parks and open spaces.

Residents, local businesses and community groups are able to post their ideas through the online platform, Spacehive, asking members of the public, government and businesses to pledge funding for the project. Spacehive is then on hand to support groups to run a successful crowdfunding campaign.

Crowdfunding aims to empower the community to work in partnership with the council to make a change. This is a core part of the council’s goal of building more involved and resilient communities – recognising that residents, business owners and communities want to be more involved in what happens in their local area.
