"I love where I live and want my neighbourhood to be the best it can be. So I arranged the painting of this bridge – to cheer people up by smartening the area. It was a massive job, dealing with road closures, funding, agencies. Then Network Rail used it as a case study in 'How to work with a Community'! I've been working full-time as a PA for the same person for 40 years. So anything organizational is my forte. I often work with local businesses and I can take admin in my stride. The rest you have to learn. Since January I've been working with 3 boroughs to have the shop-front graffiti and stickers removed from Cricklewood Broadway. I felt we should make the place nicer as we're coming out of COVID; it would make us look at things in a different light. We've completed the Brent side, we're 3/4 of the way through the Barnet side, and we're currently working with Camden. We do loads of clean-ups. We also maintain the Cricklewood sign in the bridge tunnel and frequently ask residents to pitch up on a Saturday morning and give that a wash. Just as we were coming out of COVID, we got a local business to weed the central reservation on Cricklewood Broadway with us and remove graffiti from their own building.
"Smartening up the bridge in Cricklewood Lane was all my own project and dealing with it alone was a real biggie. It took a good 3 to 4 months of solid work. I'm soon to have a meeting with Network Rail to discuss the bridge again because it's leaking like a sieve and the pigeon-proofing needs replacing. We have endless meetings like this, just trying to keep on top of things. I've always cared about my environment. It's good to feel a bit of civic pride and to make my neighbourhood a nicer place.”
