“I'm from Nigeria and I'm a mini-cab driver by profession. I came here about 35 years ago, and I’m 61 now. I should look younger but this lot give me stress – they keep me on my toes. I've been with NW Cars for 25 years. They're a good company, good bosses, and one smiley customer can bring more jobs to the office. I don't really want to blow my own trumpet, but during the pandemic I didn't have a day off for months. Everybody was scared and only 3 or 4 of us carried on. I was just doing my job and trying my best. Lots of old people, and vulnerable or disabled people, they couldn't come out, so we had to go and get them, get them to the hospital, their appointments, wherever they were going. We looked after them, sorted them out. If they needed any shopping done we'd do that and deliver it to them.
“I trained at Frank's School of Advanced Cabbing - that's my little joke because it does you good to laugh – and I definitely see keeping the community going and cheering people up as part of my job. That's where I get my energy from, seeing someone happy, knowing that someone is there to help in time of need. My faith gives me strength, and I believe as long as I’m doing the right thing God will keep me safe. You do good, good come back. You do bad, bad come back. That's what I think, anyway. It made me feel good to be able to help, and the people we were helping, they really appreciated it.”
