Stella Cooper, 20, did her apprenticeship working for BOOST, an employment, benefit advice, skills and wellbeing project helping Barnet residents. She found the opportunity with the Barnet Group through Barnet Council’s e-newsletter when she was job hunting after leaving school.
Since joining BOOST as an apprentice Stella has gained qualifications in various areas and worked on everything from housing and benefits to social media and research projects. All the while earning £14,000 a year.
Since recently completing her apprenticeship Stella was not only awarded Apprentice of the Year, but was offered, and has taken up, a permanent position as Youth Employment Officer with BOOST.
Stella, said:
“I knew in Sixth Form that university wasn't for me but when lockdown hit, I found it very difficult to find work in any industry as I had no experience.
“I then found out about the apprenticeship programme with the Barnet Group that sounded like a really good opportunity as I would get paid while also learning on the job.
“I gained so much experience and learned about a huge variety of topics from housing and benefits to social media and employment support. I also gained multiple qualifications including housing practice, safeguarding adults, and customer service. I really think that being able to gain hands-on experience and qualifications has prepared me for the next steps in my career.”
