"I'm 76 and still going strong. I don't feel 76. That's all to do with attitude I think, and how you feel about life and wanting to survive as long as you can. I've got that bounce in me, or that 'bubble' as my second husband Irwin used to say. I lived in Granada, the Caribbean Islands with him for 26 years and it was absolute heaven. We adored each other, and to me that was all that counted, never mind that he was black and I'm Jewish. When he died and I came back to the UK to care for my mother, it felt very strange, like being on a different planet. I thought, 'I must connect with and get to know some people'. The Library Group was the very first contact I made, then I got help from organisations like the Barnet Carers Association and Age UK. I made some good friends who helped me on my way. I found my feet again, and it just felt right for me to try and help others find theirs.

"I love collecting and sharing information, and I really need to be able to share smiles and that human touch. To me, that's so important, and having fun, a chit-chat, a laugh and a joke - that’s the beauty of life. I also love making teas and coffees, I'm that kind of a welcoming person. So I started doing that for the Library Group. We've since formed a lovely close-knit connection and I'm always encouraging them to come to our meetings, because that face-to-face connection is so important, particularly for my age group who've been left behind by technology. All this automation just gives us headaches and stress! I also volunteer for Age UK Barnet because I love it and they've been so good to me. I'm just happy to do anything I can. I keep giving them ideas as well - like, 'How about getting old people with nothing better to do to be volunteers, man the phones and be the human voice?'. To me the human voice and human touch is the essence of it all. That's what I take joy in - just being able to be and connect with people, and help them if I can. It gives me a great feeling, so I'm getting the benefit too."
