"My Mum’s always been very much about giving back to the community, and she embedded that in all of us from a young age too. My parents really love having children – I’m the youngest of 6 – andwhen we'd grown up, they fostered as well. I did my 2 degrees, as well as a Masters, in teaching and Educational Psychology. The early years are so important because if you get it right at the start, secure the foundations, then that’s going to impact all the way through. I feel really lucky to have been working as an Early Years Standards Lead for Barnet, because everyone is very forward thinking here. I was also lucky that I had a team who were as dedicated and passionate as I am. There were 6 of us looking after over 500 nurseries and childminders and 98 schools with early years.
“When the pandemic happened and many of them stayed open, on the front line, so that parents could continue to go to work and keep society running, it was an incredibly anxious and stressful time for them. So we kept in close contact, made them feel valued and appreciated, that they were being heard and cared for, and that we were all in this together. We wanted to make sure we were having the biggest impact we could, even working from home. So most of us were working late, making and answering calls at all hours to make sure they had the support they needed, and we were always trying to come up with innovative solutions too, thinking, 'Ooh, we could try this'. We got the Council to provide them with free PPE, updated them on and tried to clarify the ever-changing COVID rules, and shared information about things like their nearest food banks and women's refuges. It was a crazy time, but I'm so happy we managed to do everything we possibly could."
