"The war in my country, Afghanistan, started when I was 16-17. It killed members of my family, stopped my studies and made everything damaged and broken. I nearly lost my left leg in an explosion but UNICEF saved it, they fixed it with a metal plate. When I came here in 2002, I had nothing, not even English. The only English I knew was 'Yes' and 'No'. So I started to work, work, work, because I needed to support my mum, dad, sister and uncle back in Afghanistan too. No time to study. Now I've got my own business, I've got my own house, I've got a lovely car, everything, all from working hard in the right way.
“My wife and I have 4 kids - a daughter and 3 sons. Always when I’m talking to them about the future, I’m telling them that studying is more important than anything else. 'Finish your studies, go to university. Whatever it costs, your Daddy will be here. First make yourself a proper person for your community and humanity, for your country, not only for me and your mummy. To have a good life, or a better life, you have to work hard, keep going, walk and run.'"
